Motivation Monday: The Susan G. Komen San Diego 3-Day

11.18.2013

Where do I even start?

Last year one of my closest friends/co-worker/cubicle neighbor walked the 2012 Susan G. Komen 3-Day 60 mile Walk for the Cure. She was a team of one during that walk, under the team name "Tit for Tat" that she has used for breast cancer fundraisers over the years, ever since her mom won a battle with the disease. This year, when she announced that she was going to do it again, I secretly considered signing up with her. But I kept that a secret for months because I wasn't sure I really wanted to commit.

Then I started reading a blog written by someone younger than me who was currently battling breast cancer. At the time she was having to drop out of a half marathon because of her diagnosis. Meanwhile, I was training for my first full marathon, so her situation hit just a little too close to home. And breast cancer does run in my family after all: I never got the chance to know my maternal grandmother or great-grandmother who both died because of it. I was inspired by her attitude and her story and decided then and there to register for the walk. As a proud new member of Team Tit for Tat, I would have to raise $2,300 to participate and walk 60 miles through San Diego over the course of one weekend.

Flash forward through 8 months of fundraising, including selling ads on this blog and crocheting beanies to raise money: the 3-Day finally arrived this past weekend. Our adorable Team Captain, Marisa (who somehow tricked 5 other people to join the team too) made us pins and Team Tit for Tat tank tops that we proudly modeled on Day 1.

Up at 5:30am at the Del Mar Fairgrounds for Opening Ceremonies

During the opening ceremony, I started to get an idea of just how emotional this weekend was going to get. Several men and women took the stage to read their reasons for walking and before long, I was bawling uncontrollably. Sometimes when you're fundraising for an event instead of doing service-related charity, it can be hard to understand the impact of what you're doing. Listening to these supporters and survivors, I started to understand what the Susan G. Komen foundation is actually able to do for people with the money we raise and that was a great way to start the weekend.

We started the walk at the Fairgrounds and walked through Del Mar on our way to Torrey Pines and La Jolla. As soon as we got into the downtown Del Mar area, I was overwhelmed with how huge this event really is. I could see a river of pink walking behind me and ahead of me and the sidewalks were lined with supporters, cheering us on, handing us snacks and beverages (one guy joked that it's called the 3-Day buffet), and doing whatever they could to make us laugh or thank us. And honestly? It all felt a little bit undeserved until we came across breast cancer survivors who told us via signs or cheers just how much our efforts meant to them (cue: more bawling on my part).

The lovely ladies of Team Tit for Tat at the top of our first big hill, Torrey Pines

Outside of Del Mar, our super sweet co-worker Kelli met us at the base of Torrey Pines hill and walked it with us. Kelli is one of those women who just lives life to the fullest. Whenever I talk to her she tells me about some awesome thing she's doing, like playing the uke in a meetup group or stand-up paddle-boarding. It was so great of her to come out and support us during our first major hill.

The course map said we walked 20 miles that first day but a lot of Walkers said their GPS's and apps read that we walked 25-27 miles. It sure felt like it. We started at 7:30am and crossed the Day 1 finish line into Mission Bay park around 5:30pm. My lovely bestie Bonnie came out to pick me up and give me a ride and after catching up on Scandal at her house (priorities), I headed home and went to sleep around 7pm.

We made it! The end of Day 1

At 6am on Day 2, I was hurting. Even though I am a runner, my running training did not prepare me for 8+ straight hours of physical activity, no matter how low impact it was. Yet, there I was, riding shotgun in Ryan's car on Day 2 at the crack of dawn, ready to do it all over again.

I met the team at Mission Bay and we headed through SeaWorld and along the San Diego River over to Ocean Beach where we spent the day walking amidst beautiful views in OB, Point Loma, Sunset Cliffs and Mission Beach. While Day 2 was the toughest on all of us physically, it was also the most fun. Our teammate Ashley's parents met us in OB with hot chocolate and Bailey's and between them, the SeaWorld employees, and the other supporters who cheered us on at Robb Field, we were really starting to feel the love - and understand why it was somewhat necessary to keep us going.

My favorite Walker Stalker, thanks to Team Hula Hooters

In fact, whenever my feet hurt or my back hurt or I started to get tired, I didn't have to look far for motivation. There were my beautiful and hilarious teammates, first and foremost, who were trucking on alongside me, there were Girl Scouts who were so excited to cheer us on with their chants and the pins they made us, there were the dancing SDPD bike cops cracking us up, there were survivors thanking us everywhere we went and just amazingly warm-hearted people rooting us on at every turn. Most of all, all I had to do was think about how insignificant my 3 days of achy, self-inflicted "suffering" was in comparison to that of the women and men who battle breast cancer. The outpouring of support and love and humor and generosity that you experience during an event like this is just unlike anything you could get anywhere else.

Still... the pain.

Motivation was constant, but so was the ache in my feet. Which is when we decided to call in reinforcements in the form of my favorite cinnamon flavored beverage, Fireball. The Fireball got us through all of our various ailments during the last few hours of Day 2 and left us finishing Mile 40 with happy, smiling faces.

Very discrete

More Fireball to get us through the "last 3 miles" of Day 2

Don't worry, contrary to what it may look like, I didn't actually lose a leg in a Fireball-induced haze

Day 3 was the final day that my amazing boyfriend had to cart my exhausted body over to the Starting Line at dawn. This time though, I had Brewer with me to pull me along for the first 5 miles. He made a pretty cute Walker in his pink bandanna and made my morning infinitely easier, even after he crapped all over my leg (much to my embarrassment, I didn't even notice until another Walker pointed it out). Ryan and Banjo met back up with us around Mile 45 in Mission Beach to relieve Brewer of his walking duties and I took advantage of the puppy photo op.

Once Brewer left, it was a blur of nonstop pain and thorough exhaustion that neither Fireball nor cheerleading could really alleviate. We marched on though, putting one foot in front of the other, back around the San Diego River on our way to Old Town and the major hill (Juan Street) that awaited us there. Which is why we were so thankful to see Marisa's mom (a survivor herself) and mother-in-law and my dear friend Raina show us up to walk with us for what was arguably the most brutally boring part of the whole walk. Their presence came at a pretty crucial time during the day.

As we hobbled on through Hillcrest towards the finish line at Petco Park, none of us could really talk or think or feel our legs. I had shin splints and there was a surplus of bum knees and achy feet and painful backs. And this is where I started to get really emotional. The last five miles were just a flood of emotions for every reason you can think of. Finally, one Komen mile (the kind of mile that is actually anywhere from 1.1 to 5 miles long) away from Petco Park, a choir of singing children led by a survivor, absolutely annihilated me. In case you were wondering, I cried a lot this weekend.

Then suddenly we were done. We crossed the finish line and picked up our t-shirts and stumbled over to South Paw to meet up with our family and friends and beer. Ryan and Bonnie and Ian and Anjali and Pre were waiting for me there and I could not have been happier to see them. I am always grateful to have such wonderful friends in my life. We managed to get a few beers in before the equally emotional closing ceremonies where everyone took off a shoe and raised it high in the sky in support of all those who couldn't walk with us and those we were walking for. It was a beautiful end to a beautiful weekend.

There is so much that I'm forgetting and so many wonderful mammaries (sorry, my new breast friends and I have been speaking in boob jokes for days...) that I wish I could share. The thing is though, you just have to be there for this one. It's an unbelievable 3 days of camaraderie and love and strength and support. And while I don't think I'll walk another 3-Day, I will forever try to support the Walkers through cheering and Fireball stations and of course, donations. And now I'd like to thank those who donated to me, without whom, I wouldn't have had the privilege to experience this weekend firsthand:

My father and brother
My fantastic co-workers and company
Gayle Talabay - a beautiful and inspiring previvor and blogger
The Long Family
Peter Barker-Homek
My lovely friends Keri, Kemi, Anj and Pretesh
My Aunt Micki and Uncle Ed
One of my oldest friends Ashley and her mom, Grace
Devon DeMint - one of my favorite bloggers and whose cousin is the survivor who inspired me to commit!
Andie Lee

Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a SkinAgain Giveaway!

10.10.2013

Breast Cancer Awareness Month has taken on a whole new meaning for me this year now that I'm participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day 60 Mile Walk for the Cure here in San Diego in November. Now that I'm in involved with fundraising for Breast Cancer Research, I've been humbled by the number of stories that I have heard from friends, family, readers and co-workers about how breast cancer has affected their lives. And with each story, I am that much more aware of the desperate need for a cure.

When SkinAgain contacted me and asked me if I'd like to partner with them in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month, I immediately said yes for three reasons: 1. I love supporting local businesses and SkinAgain is located just up the coast from me in Carlsbad, 2. It's a female-founded, all natural, paraben- and cruelty-free company and 3. They're not only supporting breast cancer awareness this month by donating 5% of all proceeds to The Breast Cancer Society, Inc., they're also making products that can actually help women who are battling breast cancer.

The founder, Sherrie Berry, started the company after suffering from a chemical burn in her backyard. She was given a cream to help with the healing by a Swiss entrepreneur and soon realized that the product held exceptional potential for helping other women who suffered from burns. SkinAgain was born and its first product, the Rescue cream, does just that. Today, Rescue is the #1 leading product for post-cosmetic, post-hair removal and post-radiation procedures, as well as burns.

I'm excited to be giving away two full-size bottles of their Relief and Rescue products. Relief is the go-to for getting through these dry winters, when your skin gets itchy and red in the cold air. It can also help to control rosacea, something you might know a thing or two about if you've got Irish skin like me. Rescue is a a cure-all for everything from sunburns to post-wax or laser treatment to burning yourself on the oven while you frantically cook your Thanksgiving dinner. Together, these two creams work to protect your skin and are a must-have for your medicine cabinet! Oh and did I mention.... this is a $100 value?

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Even if you don't win the giveaway, I encourage you to check out SkinAgain's other products like Youth, which diminishes darks spots and wrinkles, and Vanish, which works to reduce cellulite. And, throughout the month of October, you can use Promo Code: ILOVETATAS and receive 20% off your order! Plus, the first 30 customers who use this code will receive a pink jute tote bag as a thank you for helping SkinAgain to boost their donations efforts during Breast Cancer Awareness month. Save your skin, save the tatas and enjoy a discount while you do it!

I'm so excited today to announce that my 3-Day team captain / work wife and I have filled the SanBriego Etsy shop with a bunch of fall beanies!! We're crocheting more colors and styles at work everyday throughout Breast Cancer Awareness month and selling them in the shop for $16-$22 each. The best part? ALL of the proceeds from these hats will go to charity! We are still a ways away from our team goal of $18,400 and every little bit helps!

So if you're looking for a cozy, unique hat for this fall, please consider supporting the boobies and buying one from us. We'll take custom orders as well! Go buy some Beanies for Boobies!

Motivation Monday: You Better Work, B....

9.23.2013

Britney Spears's new song "Work Bitch" is a gift from the workout gods.

That is really all I have to say on this gorgeous Motivation Monday. Those headphones I'm listening to up there? They're playing "Work Bitch." Do you know what song I listened to approximately 57x on my runs this weekend? I listened to "Work Bitch." It's perfect. It's like a coach screaming at you the whole time you're working out only your coach is awesome and you know that if she can break down and shave her head and lose total control of her finances and two small children and still get her bangin' body back, then dammit, so can you. You just have to work for it. Bitch.

I feel good about my workouts this past week. I got back on the road twice in one week which is promising and both times I felt so relaxed after. It made me realize truly how much I need my runs. I was supposed to start CrossFit but conflicts caused the trainer to cancel class. That adventure starts this week. I got to bikram once and got Ryan to come with me on a 3-Day training walk as well. All of this coupled with a lot of healthy home cooking made this a successful kickoff to the marathon madness that is about to begin in a week or two.

9/16/13 - 9/22/13 Health and Fitness Stats:
  • bikram x1
  • ran 2 days for a total of 9 miles
  • walked 4 miles for the 3-Day

Motivation Monday: 9 Weeks To Go

9.16.2013

I can't believe there's only nine weeks left until the 3 Day! It's been a crazy summer of planning and fundraising and I am so touched by all the support from people I haven't even met.

For most people, the 60 miles of walking within 3 days is the intimidating part. But for me, it was raising money. I've never raised more than $300 before and I've definitely never been comfortable asking anyone for anything. For that reason, this experience has been an experiment in courage and creativity. Selling ads on this blog, offering to redo resumes in exchange for donations, crocheting beanies to (eventually) sell in my Etsy shop... these are all the things that I've been up to this summer. And even though I didn't meet my end of summer goal ($1,500), I feel pretty good about what I have raised and what we have coming up.

Half of my team is comprised of coworkers (the lovely ladies pictured with me above) and we are working now to put together a work fundraiser for October (which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month). I feel pretty confident that the fundraiser will contribute a decent amount to my goal. Marisa (far right) is our team captain and working with me on our lunch breaks to crochet beanies for the shop and I just learned about a great way to raise even more money through companies with matching gifts policies. So I'm on my way. But still. Nine weeks!

You know what nine weeks also means? I better get walking.

Although I wasn't scared by the walking at first, as we get closer, I'm starting to feel a little intimidated by the thought of walking 2+ marathons in one weekend. Also, to be honest I wasn't very good about my health OR fitness last week. School is now in full swing and my current class slammed me with a paper this past week on top of our regular classwork, so I've been more or less buried. But this week I start CrossFit (more on that next Monday!) and have a couple of walks and runs planned. My little fitness break is officially over.

I have so much gratitude for the people who have donated or shown their support for this initiative and I plan on thanking each of them in a separate post following the 3 Day. But for those who have contributed and read this blog, please know that each of your donations has made me so emotional and kept me motivated to keep on this sometimes awkward, sometimes tough journey knowing that it will have a really great impact in the end.

If you would like to donate, please click the link in the right hand column under "Donate" to reach my personal page.

Restaurant Review: Beachgrass Cafe, Encinitas, CA

7.16.2013

Now that we're only 5 months away from the 3-Day 60 Mile Susan G. Komen walk here in San Diego, our Team Tit for Tat captain thought it would be a good idea to get together for brunch and start discussing training and fundraising. Picking a brunch place that was equidistant to all of us was difficult, but Marisa found a restaurant in Encinitas with great reviews: Beachgrass Cafe.

Usually I'm not a fan of sweet things for breakfast, so I was leaning towards Scramble #3 which has asparagus, green onions, red & green peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, feta and avocado. AKA, all of my favorite things (except avocado, not such a fan, probably an east coast thing). But then I saw their Oatmeal Pancakes with roasted pears and marshmallow cream on top and I was sold.

A full size of the oatmeal pancakes, a side of crispy bacon, and two (large) grapefruit mimosas later, I'd had one of the best brunches ever. But it got even better when we learned that the restaurant had just tweeted the link to our Team Tit for Tat fundraising page in support! Nothing beats a restaurant with good food and drinks that actually cares about its customers. Thanks for having us, Beachgrass Cafe!

My lovely coworkers / half of our 3 Day team!

My Summer To-Do List

6.06.2013

Brewer, Banjo, and their friend Barkley during our group picnic in Balboa Park //  Ryan and I aboard The Privateer //  Common dolphins during our sunset cruise // A DIY success! Painted the pot, macrame-ed the hanger and install a ceiling hook for our Goldfish Plant // 3D tiger art made entirely out of beer bottle caps on exhibit at Gelato Vero // Post-marathon BBQ in the backyard :)

I still can't believe it's June already! It's been a beautiful, busy spring so far in San Diego and even though I've been mostly tied up in training, work, and school, we've still managed to fit in quite a bit of fun stuff: a Devendra Banhart concert, a sunset cruise around the Bay, watching all four seasons of Arrested Development (well, almost - a few episodes to go!), a couple of home improvement projects, some BBQs, some disc golf, a little dog beach, a little dog park, a picnic at Balboa and lots of froyo runs in place of bar nights. Now with the marathon out of the way and my class winding up, summer is almost here and I'm ready to make the most of it!

My ever-growing summer to-do list is in addition to my overall 2013 goals, most of which are still in progress. These are the things that have come up throughout the first half of the year or that are summer-specific.
  1. Bedroom remodel! Time to settle on a shade of turquoise and start painting! Bedroom remodel post here!
  2. Spend a lot more time in the hammock.
  3. Ride bikes down to the bay and have a bonfire picnic.
  4. Run at least 1 half marathon (any suggestions in SoCal?).
  5. Raise $1500 of my $2300 3-Day fundraising goal.
  6. Cook 1-2 new dinners each week.
  7. Bikram my butt off until I've lost 8lbs.
  8. Go camping at San Onofre with the dogs.
  9. Day trip to San Clemente.
  10. Get the @SanBriego follower count up to 1,000! Done! Broke 1,000 on 7/18/2013!!
What are your plans for the summer?

Runner's Raffle: Medal Display and Spartan Race Entry!!!

6.04.2013

I'm so excited to host my first raffle in support of my 3 Day 60-mile Susan G. Komen Walk for Breast Cancer this fall! Both my maternal great-grandmother and grandmother lost their battle with breast cancer before I really had a chance to get to know them and I've watched several friends and co-workers battle the disease. Supporting this cause is so important to me - so much so that I'm willing to essentially complete 2 full marathons in 3 days to raise money for it. And really, come on... who doesn't love boobies!?

Over the course of the next five months, I will be hosting several raffles in support of this cause. For my first raffle, I'm super amped to give one lucky winner a 2 prize combo pack: a race entry to ANY Spartan race in the country and a medal display (pictured above) for all of your racing medals! You don't have to donate to win, but I sure hope that you'll consider it. The combined cost of the two prizes in this package are over $150! For a small donation, even just $10, you'll have a better chance of winning while supporting a great cause.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

The race closes in two weeks and the winner will be announced then. But if you don't win, don't worry! You still supported a great cause! For that, you deserve a 15% off code for any Spartan Race you decide to do. With races all over the country, including a few here in Southern California, the Spartan Race is a fun opportunity to cross-train, appreciate your running in a new way, and do a race that's a little different and more exciting. I hope that you'll check it out! And please be sure to check out Running on the Wall as well, as they were so generous to donate a new medal display for this cause!

Aloha Friday!

3.22.2013

You know what makes a hangover worth it? A night like last night. We went to see Wavves and FIDLAR at The Casbah and then met our neighbors for a night cap (which obviously turned into closing the bar). The whole night was too much fun and on top of that, it ended with being welcomed home by our two furry spazzes. Which is always the perfect way to end a night.

But I'm paying for it right now. My brain is barely functioning at the most basic levels. I can't wait to get home and take a longggggg nap. In the meantime, I'm smiling just thinking about what an awesome and surprisingly productive week this has been, despite (or maybe because of) the fact that I've been sick for most of it.

1. WE HAVE A WASHER AND DRYER!!! This week we finally had a handyman come to install the washer and dryer we bought from our neighbors in January. I still have to clean them out before they're functional but I can't even tell you how happy I am. No more laundromats! No more laundromats! NO MORE LAUNDROMATS!

2. Our Coachella tickets are here! I went and picked up our wristbands and camping pass on Wednesday. Less than three weeks! Only three little weeks are between me and my favorite time of year. :)

3. I registered for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day 60 Mile Walk for Breast Cancer here in San Diego this November. I'm a big fan of fellow San Diegan Devon's blog The Mermaid Chronicles and ever since she shared her cousin Michelle's blog Killer Boobies, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. Michelle is only two years younger than me and she is currently fighting a battle against breast cancer. My grandmother and my great grandmother both lost their lives to breast cancer and one day it may be something that I face too. My friend Marisa did the 3-Day last year and invited me to do it with her this year and I'm happy to say that after reading Michelle's most recent blog post I finally decided to sign up.Time to get started fundraising!

4. How awesome was this week's episode of New Girl? There is seriously no other show that can put me in a better mood. Sidenote: if you need a dose of New Girl giggles today, watch this gag reel from Season 1.

5. Tomorrow is the Indian engagement ceremony for one of my best friends/one of my favorite couples and I can't wait. I've never been to any type of cultural wedding event so I'm really interested to learn what's involved. Plus, I'm looking forward to some deeeelicious Indian food tomorrow. :)
